How does Ask a Lancashire Librarian work?

Lancashire librarians staff this web-based real-time enquiry service. If your question relates to your library account, please ensure you include your library card number. If you want to remain anonymous you can click or tap Start Chat, this will open a Guest session. Otherwise add your name and email address.

If we're not online you can submit a question and we’ll get back to you the next working day. You will need to add an email address for us to answer your question.

While every effort is made to provide accurate and authoritative information, Ask a Lancashire Librarian does not control the content of resources used. The staff may offer you sources to use and suggestions on where to search. They will not offer formal advice or opinion.

Please be patient as our librarians will need time to find answers to your questions. If you prefer to have your answer sent later please let us know.

We treat our users with respect and expect the same in return. By using the Ask a Lancashire Librarian service you agree not to send any question or content that is illegal, harassing, libellous, threatening, harmful, obscene, or otherwise objectionable. Where appropriate the chat session will be terminated.

Unacceptable behaviour includes, but is not limited to:

• Using offensive or obscene language or language of a racist/sexist nature.

• Transmitting messages that harass or threaten the librarians.

• Sharing inappropriate or personal data in a screensharing session.

• Deliberately wasting librarian effort or time in a way that denies service to other legitimate users of the service

Whilst using this service we will collect your name and email address if you supply them, and the transcript of your chat session and subsequent update conversations. While using Springshare Services and websites, we may also automatically collect information that does not directly identify you. This information may include your IP address, your computer and device identifiers, your general geographic location, browser cookies, and information about the devices or software you use to access Springshare Services and websites. Your personal data will be removed from the service after 6 months for all closed transactions.

To use this platform, the system writes one or more cookies in your browser. These cookies are not shared with any third parties. In addition, your IP address and browser information is stored in server logs and used to generate anonymized usage statistics. Lancashire Library Service uses these statistics to gauge the use of library content, and the information is not shared with any third parties
